Why Gran Turismo looks like it has Anti Aliasing

Ever wondered how Sony got Gran Turismo looking so good on the PSP? As if the had anti Aliasing x 2? Which we know the PSP hardware cannot do. Well Graphics Horse of the NeoGAF forums found that Sony has developed a rather cool little software trick to reduce the jagged look some other PSP games suffer from.

This software trick moves the camera frame to the right by one pixel ever second frame. As shown here below, the result is a image that looks like it has AA x 2 on. Clever, I hope this is applied to future PSP titles.

The first GT frame rendered

The first Grand Turismo frame rendered.

The second GT frame rendered, one pixel out

The second GT frame rendered, one pixel out

The two frames in slow motion mixed together

The final result you see displayed on your PSP

And the final result you see displayed on the PSP.

That is rely cool. I have GT2 PSX on my PSP and GT PSP looks way better. Kinda funny that a portable game looks better than a console.

If ALL future PSP games use this sort of technique, I’ll gladly disregard the fact that I have to get used to the idea of the PSPgo as the next gen Sony portable.

personally i’d have to say this is one of the best games on psp you can get, only problemi’ve found is aqcuiring money, unless you know someone else with a psp but other than that this games great, great graphics considering this is on a PSP,….im seeing alot of people not taking that into consideration…oh my god no the graphics aren’t phenominal, but being on a portable platform like this i think the graphics are outstanding, the “ghost effect” is for time trials only, read the in game manual people, for the dude with the fuzziness problem, its your iso, get a better one, mine’s 986 MB FYI, also if you didnt know this if you get an ISO there’s an option to download additional data in the options menu located in the main menu, this data makes the game run much faster…..onnly quams about this game is 1 no story mode, 2 cant upgrade your cars, and 3 in multiplayer mode you can set your driver to be an A.I. driver so you dont have to drive but in single player you cant use it…just seems like it should be the other way around considering how GT4 was, but the positives are you have an option from about 935 cars, outrageous, the driving on it is great, not like NFS where you can take a hairpin at 180, there’s actually an in car view, grantid the interior is blacked out but hey its on a psp what do you expect, and all the cars you acquire in the psp game along with prologue can be transferred over to GT5 when it comes out…… just got the Ferrari F2007 WOOOO
