I just bought a PSP Slim and know very little about homebrew. Does this mean that I can run these emulators on the official 3.72 firmware, or do these still require a custom firmware?

Yes they need custom firmware to run. Official firmware 3.71 wont wont. Get a custom firmware from the download section ok
