A new Japanese game released called “The IdolM@ster” comes with a new FW, 5.05. What makes it different?
Apparently it’s unable to be played on CFW, even spoofing it won’t work. Here’s a quote from a person (unidentified) that sent an e-mail to QJ about what’s going on:
The series of THE iDOLM@STER SP games (japanese), released today but leaked earlier, comes with a new and neat 5.05 update that is pretty much required for the game to run, or, at least, does not work on any existing CFW at the time. Spoofing the version through version.txt seemingly doesn’t work, either. Anyway, the update (directly from the UMD, but PBP unpacker or the like can be used to make a PBP) will be available in http://www.project-imas.com/share/505.rar (25 MB) in about 45 minutes.
According to QJ, it’s NOT recommended to test the link until it’s proven, unless you know what you’re doing. My insight on this though, why not just use UMDGen and delete the Update file? I don’t know, but I’ll leave that to the person who sent the e-mail.

Why delete the update from the ISO? What would that do?
If a spoofing doesn’t work, it probably means that the game requires something from Firmware 5.05 to work.
Based on that, I’d say that when CFW 5.05 M33 or later appears, then problem solved (for that game anyways).

Ah, I see where you’re at. I worded it wrong/thought it wrong. I meant that you could probabley delete the file that knows when you’re on FW 5.05 and see what happens. If someone has the disc, they could try it out.

But remember, using a Spoofer doesn’t work, so it’s either the game is “too smart” & figures out what actual firmware you have, or, it requires something in that specific firmware to function.
Personally, I think that if it requires something from that firmware, then ALL later updates for the PSP will be required to have it, leading to an unchangeable variable in all future updates, which kind of lowers security expectations, especially if that “variable” had some sort of error that creates a loop hole for hackers
And concerning that “Too Smart”, it could just “Think Differently”, which could lead to it being even “Dumber”
Of course, this is all speculation

My bet’s on the needing a new feature in 5.05.
I just hope DAX releases 5.05 m33 before resistance: retribution and phantasy star portable come out.

It Just occurred to me!
When we play games from our memory sticks, we usually use either M33 Drive, or Sony NP9660. Of course, most people use Sony NP9660 because of better compatibility, as in, it works with all games, unlike the M33 which is still far from perfect (last I’ve checked).
What if this game requires a different drive to run?
That could potentially be a little problematic. If that’s the case, then we might have to start changing drives every now & then when we want to play specific games, & that’s if DAX adds them anyways…
Let’s hope for the best, this is just a bluff

Well, the thing is, Dax could just get the stuff from 5.05 and put it on a new M33 FW, like he does with all the other firmwares. But yeah, you do have a point with the ISO drives… But really, it’s not that hard to press select and change the drive is it? For now, I’ll just wait until Dax has the solution.

Just imagine every other game comes out with its own drive, & eventually having a minimum of 10 to 20+ drives, & carrying a list with you that says which games goes with what XD! lol
Whatever it is, it should be easy to deal with, but it would make things harder at some point, which is why Sony’s doing all of this. & every user has to update to the latest “5.05 M33″ CFW.
I’m a bit paranoid, but THAT could be the actual reason this is happening… Updating to the latest 5.05 Firmware (Custom or not). Hmm…
At any rate, we’ll see what happens.
