Judging from the comments made on PSPGen (The GEN/Miriam Custom Firmware homepage) Version 4.00 GEN might not see the light of day as a public release. Although a beta version of 4.00 Gen has been completed by Miriam, Team GEN might keep this release internal as they are aware that Dark_AleX and team M33 and busy on thier own custom firmware - 4.00 M33 due to be released soon.
Miriam / Team GEN - Translated from French:
“The concept of Custom firmware GEN was to show that there is an alternative to Dark_Alex but never try to take his place. If he returns to the runway, the need for the line 4.00 GEN does not feel right.”
So either way users wanting to run homebrew with the features of Firmware 4.00 will have their custom firmware soon be it 4.00 M33 or 4.00 GEN. Its nice to see they are not directly competing, racing to see who will get 4.00 custom firmware out first.
So what do you think? 4.00 Gen should be unreleased? Let the Team M33 release their work first?

Team M33 have returned and are busy working on PSP Custom Firmware 4.00 M33. The master himself Dark_AleX is working on this now. Its also reported that there will be a brand new recovery menu in 4.00 M33, no other new features to be added at this stage other than what was included in the official Firmware 4.00 update. The release date? No date set yet, however 4.00 M33 custom firmware will be released soon…

PSP Firmware 4.00 has been decrypted and by the same team that brought us PSP Custom Firmware 3.95 GEN. So what does this mean to us? Well this opens the door up now for either 4.00 GEN or M33 custom firmware. Decrypting the firmware is the first step towards Custom Firmware enlightenment.
From the PSPGen website, translated from French:
“Many PRX’s were changed such that pops popsman, npdrm, np9660, mlnbridge, sysmem, umdcache, sysconf, video, etc.. Good news, it will not pose too many problems for future adaptations for a Custom firmware.
Please note that the NIDS do not seem to have been changed but the file pafmini has yet changed what can possibly ask for the concerns of some compatibility issues.
This suggests that a custom Firmware based on firmware 4.00 will be rapidly introduced

PSP Firmware 4.00 has been released by Sony. This slighty lack lustre release features the new internet search feature via google and the ability to control the view speed of videos on the memory stick! Wow I hear you say…. Not much of a release for a x.00 step up in Firmware.
* [Internet Search"] has been added as a feature under [Network"].
* You can now change viewing speed during video playback by pressing the UP/DOWN buttons. Use this feature if you want to watch a video quickly, or if you want to slow down playback and listen to the dialogue carefully.

Sony have posted on thier blog that PSP firmware 4.00 will be released soon. While there are some new features, nothing major has been added like the much wanted DivX support. Oh well I guess next release? Fingers crossed, come on Sony its what were after! Question is will M33 / Dark_AleX be releasing 4.00 M33? No word from DAX himself yet if he will commit to working on 4.00 M33 when it is released…
“I wanted to give you all a heads up that a new PSP system software update, v4.00, will be released soon, adding Google Internet search directly to the XMB (XrossMediaBar) interface.
This new upgrade replicates the Google Internet search experience, delivering the same search results that you’d get at www.google.com. And with a search history recall of 20 items, Web searches couldn’t be easier.
After you download and install the firmware on your PSP, click on the XMB’s Network icon and then the new Internet Search icon. Enter your keywords and then let Google’s algorithms do the work. You’ll need to be connected to the Internet via a wireless access point or Wi-Fi hotspot. Googling something on the go has never been more convenient on your PSP.
Another new feature delivered through the 4.00 update is the ability to change viewing speed during playback of videos stored on your Memory Stick PRO Duo, so you can speed through or slow down what you’re watching. To do this simply press the up or down directional buttons while playing a video. Enjoy!”
