[Release] PSP Converter v1.06 – Auto convert videos to PSP format

Share

KG6ZVP has posted an update to his application , which converts any video file over to a format suitable for playback on your PSP. It can even ripp a copy of a DVD over to the PSP format. This version has a new formula-based bitrate calculation when using the DVD ripper which results in improved video compression.

The program does everything for you, it automates video conversion from any source to the PSP format. It calculates a PSP compatible resolution (480×272) based on input aspect ratio and will then determine the best bit-rate for the encode. Its all run from a single batch file.

PSP Converter v1.06 Changelog:

Added formula-based bitrate calculation to DVD-ripping (much more precise and yields better compression than table-based)

Wow very nice changelog. Not a very much fan of movies on PSP due to its high use of memory. Will this allow you compress the file size though?

    • KG6ZVP

Yes. A 90min movie will take up approximately 240-270mb.
      -
Personally, I use it all the time. I recently converted several episodes of Burn Notice from the iTunes store (I don’t have an iPod) and each 42min episode was somewhere between 120-130mb.

      Does that answer your question?

      • skylinekid17

        Yea man thanks!

  • darktech

i have movies on my computer i want to take on my psp, but they are AVI format and are around 1.2GB.
is there an exact compression input area?
for instance,if i could make them 200mb and have a variable framerate depending on size.

    • KG6ZVP

Well, my converter does not do that. To date, I do not know of any converter which does what I would call ‘smart’ compression in the manner you refer to.

My program is geared toward automation only. It will consistently deliver high quality, PSP compatible movies with a maximum resolution (on the low setting) of 480×272 and (on the high setting) with a maximum resolution of 720×480.

Does that answer your question? (Feel free to ask more)
ps: If you need any help with doing something like that, I would be happy to assist. However, at this time I haven’t really planned on implementing anything like that on my current program.

well, i know of one program that does this exact function:DVDFab.
however, it is a broken function and always ends with a corrupt video.
i have tested this program and it has utilized the best video quality in unison with compression rather than high quality 800MB(with DVDFab).

      • KG6ZVP

I’m not familiar with DVDFab. I’ll keep that in mind, though. If you’d like, I could send you and/or publish an alternate version of NTSC.bat which would make files with a maximum resolution of 320×240. Would that be of any help?

      • darktech

it would be of great help if you could upload it :)

      • KG6ZVP

I’ll upload it as soon as it’s complete. Probably won’t be today, though.

    Thank You. Danke.

      Bitte. Es freude mich.

It would also be great if you can add subtitle support. Hard-subbing can be a good addition especialy for deaf people or when encoding a non english movie.

    • KG6ZVP

That’s been my thought for awhile. Only started working on it recently. Probably won’t be released for awhile unless I suddenly start trying to convert a lot of movies in Swiss German or something.
      -
I wrote a custom NTSC.bat for myself which pauses the encode and allows the user to set bitrate. I’ve been using that whenever I needed to hard-sub anything, but you can expect a release certainly before the end of summer.

for those who can’t use this application, the program “psp video 9″ is a great program to use…just google it and download…it will give you step by step instruction on how to do things…the memory isn’t as great as this app, but at least the v/a quality is nice. will take up an average of about 900mb…btw, great app KG6ZVP

  • FriiGamer

funny that there’s ads for AVS video convertor lol.
that’s what I use for psp video conversion.

How does that compare to this homebrewed one?

    • darktech

      this one is relatively better.
compared to avs video converter, the video output of PSPVC 1.06 is compressed while showing no signs of “compression lines” and offering the best encoding bitrate(depending on which quality you choose), whereas avs may put a virus on your computer in the output of some videos.

  • Patchieseec

Great program, The output file size is awesome!

  • samirpc

I think PSP Video 9 is really good. I got a downloaded movie at around 700 MB (not so good quality) and the quality is great on the psp cause the psp is much smaller. PSP Video 9 is just as good although its great to see some people making their own video converters so I might try this one.

I tried using this but it won’t work on my laptop due to it being only made for 32 bit systems. Mine is a 64 so it didn’t install properly. Is there a version of this that works with 64bit Operating Systems?

    • KG6ZVP

No, there isn’t. However, you could search for 64-bit versions of the Prerequisite Programs.
      They are:
      >DVD43
      >AVISynth
      >ffdshow (Codec Pack; This is not always necessary. See Note)
      -
*NOTE: Codec stands for Coder/Decoder and is what Windows Media Player and other programs (this video converter, for instance) use to decode different video formats and translate it into an uncompressed form for the program to either display or write to file as a different format. If you can play the video you wish to convert in Windows Media Player, then you don’t have to install anything. However, if you can’t, you need to find a codec or codec pack that will allow you to play it.

      Does that help?

  • InsanityQ

If you could make an x64 package that would be great. I am also using Windows 7 x64

    • KG6ZVP

I would, but I can’t. Unfortunately, i do not have access to a computer running a 64-bit operating system. This means that there is no way for me to put it together and test it. As far as I know, you can run 32-bit programs under 64-bit systems via the built-in hardware 32-bit emulator (I can’ t remember what it’s called off the top of my head, but it opens automatically when you open a 32-bit app).
      -
I realize that isn’t very helpful. However, I don’t have access to a 64-bit machine. Just try running it on your x64 machine. If it doesn’t work, I will try to find an alternative solution.

  • KG6ZVP

    BTW, FIXED BROKEN DOWNLOAD LINKS.

  • comk4ver

Any chance I can hard burn subtitles on the movies either dvd direct rip or .srt format? I’ve been twiddling with this stuff but it’s weird because if you convert from avi to psp format. the psp format framerate is faster so the subtitles always end up coming faster due to the framerate. maybe the next reiteriation?

    • KG6ZVP

The framerate should not be any faster. Can you give me some more detailed information? Send me an e-mail:
      kg6zvp@gmail.com

  • psp09

Could anyone please tell me what to do with the app after I download it?
    Help would be appreciated :)
