PSP Genesis Competition Winners Announced

Share

After 111 entries and almost a month of deliberation, the judges of the have selected the winners. The judging panel was made up of known PSP sceners and developers Hellcat, Davee, Lampworker, and wololo. The competition’s main sponsor & organizer, npt, was also present for the deliberations.

For those of you who don’t know, this was the first occurrence of the PSP Genesis Competition, a scene wide collaborative effort to put on the largest homebrew competition the PSP scene had ever seen. And with well over 100 entries and $4,750 in cash and prizes, it was without a doubt the largest homebrew competition ever held in the PSP scene.

That being said, let’s get to the winners:

Coming in 4th place and winning the title of “Most Ambitious Project” award is arnold’s SHELL. SHELL is an amazing project that has been in development for 2 1/2 years before the Genesis Compo, and is truly in a class of its own, giving users a truly customizable user interface. For more information on arnold’s SHELL, check out the SHELL release thread on /talk.

Coming in 3rd place is some1′s open source 0xFFFFFFFFailSploit, a 6.38/6.39 Downgrader! To anyone who was unlucky enough to be stuck on the latest firmware, some1 was a true savior, allowing them to downgrade to lower firmwares and install custom firmwares. Once his kernel exploit was released, it was quickly incorporated into current custom firmwares, allowing them to be installed on the latest 6.39 official firmware.

For winning 3rd place some1 will receive $400 + a t-shirt from PSP-Hacks. For more information about some1′s 0xFFFFFFFFailSploit, check out theofficial release thread.

Coming in 2nd place is 6.39 PRO-B6 custom firmware by coldbird and virtuousflame! Besides being constantly updated, the 6.XX PRO custom firmware is a great project for the scene due to that fact that its open source, making it a collaborative effort among many developers. I’m sure this project will continue to draw new developers and be updated for a long time.

For winning 2nd place, coldbird, virtuousflame, and the rest of the PRO team win $750 + a t-shirt from PSP-Hacks. For more information on the PRO custom firmwares, see the Google Code page.

Finally, the moment we’ve all been waiting for! Receiving 1st place in the PSP Genesis Competition, winning the grand prize of $1,900 and a PSP-Hacks t-shirt is ……. (drum roll please) ….. Lamecraft by Drakon!!! Any fan of Minecraft should definitely try out this clone for PSP, which is destined to become one of the most loved homebrew games for the PSP.

While these 4 homebrews are the winners, the other 107 homebrews entered into the contest are excellent as well. If you would like to see all 111 entries, feel free to check out this thread on the /talk forums.

A great thanks goes out to everyone involved in this competition: npt, Hellcat, wololo, Lampworker, Davee, everyone who submitted an entry, all the sponsors, and everyone else who contributed to the Genesis Compo. We’re looking forward to next year!

Congrats to Lamecraft and everyone else

Ones like shell, the custom firmware(s), and the downgrader(s) are much more deserving probably if you’re being honest.

But with that “panel” you can see why a homebrew got it, heh..

    • SuperDre

Personally I find the downgraders and CFW not real homebrew as they are ‘just’ hacks/cracks not completely developed games/apps from scratch.. Don’t get me wrong, It’s good to have those, but I don’t think they belonged in this competition..

  • giko

    congratulations to the winners.

  • JZ_212

To be honest i dont really think that they are glad with the results.
I mean its 1 game, and 3 programs 2 of wich are about firmware and i think that noone is that stupid to update their PSP after the 6.20 drought
I dont know, maby its just me but the Nazi Zombies should have been in the top 4

    • Aceofspace

      Opinions are sweet aren’t they?

      • Samir

        @JZ_212

Are you calling my friend stupid just cause he only just got a PSPgo and I only just told him about CFW and HEN.

We need to start accepting new people into the news and forums because we were all “noobs’ when we first heard about CFW

    • CrAzY KiLlEr

Nazi Zombies was good, but had alot of bugs.

    • CrAzY KiLlEr

if it weren’t for that downgrader or the pro cfw, i wouldn’t have introduced all my friends to the homebrew community.

  • …………News

They should have categorized it… .e.g GAMES SECTION, PLUG-INS SECTION, TOOLS, CFW’s, etc. rather than combined all categories which made it confusing….

    • Nightless

They specifically said at the start of the competition they wouldn’t categorize it.

Im really disappointed in the contest though, over 100 of the entries got less than 10 votes, a majority of them got under 5. Should’ve expected it… A CFW, a copy of a game that already has a huge established fanbase, and a downgrader. I think SHELL deserved it’s place.

    awwww, no TN *coughs*

Anyway, I think Lamecraft still has a looooong way to go, but its a good start. Congrats.
For me personally, PRO-Bx is the most deserving participant, though

  • Dark_AleX

congrats, but im gonna win next years by developing a avi video player for psp.

    • Samir

that would be awesome especially if it had no lag and was PSP3000/go friendly.

    • Left-4-Ninjas

that would be great, maybe even a way to select the res?

Nice the one I picked as winner one :) Lamecraft ! :D

    • H3RO

I hope drakon can form a team and make this game multiplayer. :)

  • Scorinitron

    AWESOME CONGRATS TO ALL

    On another note

I can’t find the TNT on lame craft Where is it?

  • the_4thdoctor

Congrats to the winners and kudos to all who entered to make the PSP what it is today……an indespensible carry everywhere item…Thankz to all….

  • Marcus

I can’t believe Lamecraft won, it’s so simple and as of right now there isn’t even any point to it, I mean it’s kinda fun I’ve played it but NZP is WAYYY more advanced and I’m sure it took 4x the effort and time to create it. NZP should at least be in the top 3, Lamecraft top 5.

    • http://gmail.com MrClockWK

But you are forgeting, how many people did it take to make NZP? And how many people did it take to make Lamecraft? And Lamecraft is inspired by a famous game that most people would enjoy over NZP. You are thinking in you’re own perspective, but many other people would enjoy Lamecraft more… Enough said.

  • SuperstarX64

    • TheRealBruteforced101

Afaik neur0n did not enter the competition. And He wasn’t a part of Team Pro when the last revision of pro was submitted on the competition.

Neur0n is a part of Team Pro now, so everything will be fine. :D

  • Andrew

    Lamecraft is unrivaled ;)
