Not much in the way of PSP news. But here’s something for the old rumor mill thanks to Eurogamer.

Sony plans to refresh the PlayStation Portable product line with a PSP-4000 model in late 2009 and launch a true successor – a PSP2, if you like – later.

Publishing sources, speaking to Eurogamer, were unable to provide any further detail on next year’s update, which will presumably follow this year’s PSP-3000 in taking an iterative approach. The PSP-3000 launched this October and followed a 2000-series model, the first Slim & Lite, in September 2007.

Even fewer details were available on the PSP successor, but we’re told that developers are already working on games.

Sony has not ruled out either scenario, despite SCEE president David Reeves’ assertion in MCV last week that “there are currently no plans for a PSP2″. “I go to Tokyo quite a lot and no one has referred to it – I think they have their hands full at the moment,” he said, non-committally.

Sony UK told Eurogamer today that it would not comment on rumour and speculation.

    I’m getting pretty tired of these constant updates from Sony. Are they really losing so much money from homebrew that it justifies developing more iterations of the PSP and its firmware?

    ANOTHER Pointless release by sony. Seriously, we need DIVX video compatibillity or more game son the PS store instead of new homerow buttons or w/e.

    John koller is already denying it. And Naruto chances are even if DIVX support was out people would use it for like what 14 days and then get bored of it. Im fine with my current psp. More flash memory would be nice, I really wouldnt care about second analog nub since I never play fps on psp. Friends list with less lag when accessing the internet is a YES.

    guys try considering all these stuff in your psp4000 if you could:
    a. embedded gps with US and North America maps
    b. slide/ retractable analog sticks and keys
    c. skype enabled unit
    d. bluray movies (not umds) too expensive
    e. better screen resolution and speakers
    f. dont alter the analog stick and key position/ this will be hard for hardcore gamers. we are used with the original keys.
    g. graphics for OS, as in moving icons like the ipod

    if you could these this will be the ultimate machine of the decade.
    you got music, games, internet, gps, camera, movie, skype phone molded into one hell mean machine.
