Updated: Hello World on the PS Vita!

Share

Update:  Wololo has commented on this . Its using the PSP Emulator part of the PS Vita. So its not a Vita as such. More of a PSP running on the PS Vitas’s PSP emulator.

Japanese PSP scener announced today on his blog that he was able to confirm a “Hello World” running on the PS Vita through the embedded PSP emulator. The exploit was made by developer , and most likely relies on one of our good buffer overflow friends. and for those who are wondering “is it real?”, my current answer is that I haven’t tried it yet, but knowing Mamosuke fairly well I can tell you it’s true.

Technically, the idea behind the hack is simple but brilliant: the PS Vita has a PSP emulator, and we have plenty of PSP game exploits lying around… can we assume they will work on the emulator? That’s what teck4 tried, and the answer is yes, so he managed to run unsigned code on the PS Vita.

For those who join this blog for the first time, basically how this works is that a special save data file is crafted for a specific game. When the game is asked to load the save data, through a flaw in the game code we manage to re-route the game into executing code that we wrote ourselves. That code is usually very simple, displaying a simple message (typically “hello world”, hence the name).

From there, what happened for the PSP was that we integrated these exploits into our homebrew loading tool, Half-byte Loader, which allows people to load more interesting homebrews such as emulators, etc…

Now this was quick, the PS Vita -Just released in Japan has apparently run a Hello World user mode homebrew! Yep running unsigned code and so soon. I know what your thinking a blurry crap photo and its saying FW 6.31 which is a PSP Firmware.

Explaination is its a 6.31 modified save game exploit to work on the PS Vita. A user mode exploit. This all came from Japanese hacker teck4. This guy hasn’t released the code or the game details yet as he is planing to port a HBL for this. We will see. The screenshot below is some proof. But I could do that myself with a screen dump from my PSP and then load it on the PSV. Here’s hoping some video proof will be released soon. That is much clearer.

From Mamosuke:

[UPDATE: my additional comment in english]
I read lot’s of article around the world about this Hello World on Vita and I found so many “this is fake, right?”…No, this is not a fake. But you have to think this is inevitable result because of emulation.

And you can find “Hello World for PSP Firmware 6.31 by Teck4″ and say “Why 6.31?”

Teck4 have some savegame exploits. These were found when PSP lastest firmware was 6.31. He tried to run his unsigned code without any modification..including the letter “6.31″

That’s why “6.31″ was displayed in his Hello World.

His exploit use buffer overflow of the system and, you know, what we call “Usemode exploit”, So do not expect kernel hacking from it.

I know his exploit and I know he is not a faker. That’s real. But I think this shows us that emulation tech on vita is brilliant, NOT “PS Vita is hackable!”

Well Sony should be happy, because if it can be hacked, then I will buy a PSVita, if it can’t be hacked then I will not be buying a Vita. Maybe they should realize they will make more $ if it can be hacked. Just like the PS3, I didn’t buy it til it was hacked.

Yup you got that right keith but just one thing to think about.. Remember an exploit that leads to homebrew and possibly even HEN with ISO/CSO support will mean that Sony wont be happy… They are loosing money from the PSN Store and the UMD’s (or whatever they will use in the PSP Vita). But at the end of the day they have treated us with rip off prices so we will fight back ;)

u guys r idiots , and of u has watched a vid about the vita u will see that most of the new features require connection to sony’s online server which will be closed for hackers , meaning no demos , no near , no internet except the browser maybe , no remote play for the PS3 , and NO PSN so basically all u will be having is a god dam psp that can play awesome graphics . dont get me wrong i used to own a hacked psp with emulators ,xmbs ,etc. but for the vita and PS3 i think its a very bad idea since psn is one of the most important reasons people even buy a ps3 , especially with the paid xbox version . the vita is stuffed with all new features do u really wanna restrict them to save 40$ (and less for some games) rethink it in ur mind do u REALLY wanna hacked psv

      Totally retarded your argument.

I pretend to buy 2 PSVitas, one for run original games, to play online and another to run emulators and so on.

      Don’t be a beggar man.

PSVita, seems to be an amazing system, with amazing games. Totally different from your “father”, PSP.

U$$ 250 for a “PS3 portable” is a very reasonable price and also for their games, U$$ 40 each.

The Vita hasn’t been hacked. Only the PSP emulator within the system is being used to run unsigned code, just like DS flash carts on the 3DS, since it’s long been cracked. It does not give the user access the Vita’s features, nor will it let you directly copy altered data to the system easily, due to some “Content Manager Assistant” they set up. It’s not a initial step to hacking the Vita itself.

It is something though. This could very well the the unlocked flood gate.

      • ColorblindMonk

It’s definitely a rough road ahead with the Vita, now that it may have some actual security around it. Worse case scenario, hackers may have to start from scratch if there’s no way to hit the Vita through its emulation.

is it posible port Android OS to PS VITA ?

    • ui

Yes! It’s possible, but not easy..

  • ctr3k

The PSP emulator the Hello world is running on is in kernel mode so maybe (slim chance) glitch out the emulator to run full psv homebrew?

Also the red tag on the side of the page is annoying as hell.

Its nice to see that the vita can be hacked but you can’t help but feel bad for sony. Not to many people in this world know how to stop them selfs from jsut downloading free games all day. I also find it funny how some people say we fight sony and all that when they have never made a single program for the psp in there life. just saying hacking is not bad just the people how can’t stop them selfs from downloading and stealing more than they need to.

  • jovan

If it can be hacked it WILL be a better handheld!
    Run emus(GBA,N64,SNES,NEOGEO,MAME,SEGA,NES,Turbo G16,etc;)
    Run android games!
Plus my old ps1 games and maybe even ps2 games that I own that
$ONY can’t charge me again for!!!
plus whatever else modders can create!
$ony is chargin’ an arm and a leg for their memory sticks
I gotta get that money back from somewhere else
where better than having my Vita hacked!

  • Scorinitron

This makes me think that sony is going to start the cat and mouse game again…I don’t think you guys should have released anything until the psp came out in the US then we would have a whole libary of homebrew/emus/etc that would already work. But now you guys just gave sony a 45 day head start to patch and update…

    Still nice progress!
    Contuine the good work!

  • Thrawn

Now people, do you really think sony will be down ’cause we have a possible way to run hb and maybe even hens on the vita?
I doubt it, also how high is the percentage of people owning a psp and having it hacked? 3%? 5%?
Most people owning such a device (nds, 3ds, psp or psv) don’t even know that it can be exploited.
So it won’t hurt their sales but bring in some new customers which only buy if they can exploit the device.

Could this be related to the playstation suite SDK?
