Guide to running ChickHEN R2 on your PSP-3000 / TA88v3

Finally we have Homebrew on the PSP-3000 or TA88v3 thanks to Davee and Team Typhoon. Here we bring you a small ChickHEN tutorial / guide on how to best set up ChickHEN in order to get it running and fast. Plus some recommend Homebrew Games and Emulators to get you started!

Here’s a quick run down of what we’re doing to need to get ChickHEN:

A PSP-3000 or PSP-2000 with firmware 5.03 (This is imperative, you won’t get ChickHEN to ever load with out it!)

The lastest ChickHEN release.

And a lot of patience

Firstly make sure your PSP-3000 or TA88v3 PSP-2000 has PSP Firmware 5.03 installed. Check in your PSP XMB go to Settings/ System Settings / System infomation. If you don’t have PSP 5.03 installed download it here. Create a folder called UPDATE in PSP/GAME on your memory stick and place the eboot from the archive into the folder. Run the 5.03 Firmware update from GAME / Memory stick and you will have 5.03. The firmware required to run ChickHEN.

Now download the ChickHEN R2 release from here. Open the CHickHEN R2 archive and place the folder inside Slim with gif images into your PSP memory stick location like so PSP/PHOTO (later it will be PSP/PHOTO/ChickHEN). Now place the h.bin into the root of your memory stick pro duo. Where the folders PSP, MUSIC etc are located.

Ok next step place the memory stick into the PSP. We have found this step helps ChickHEN boot with less attempts, go your PSP XMB, to settings and Restore Default Settings. Your PSP will reset, now go back into settings and turn off UMD Auto-Start and UMD Cache. We found ChickHEN loads in 2-3 goes after doing this.

Now go into Photo / Memory Stick and ChickHEN. And wait, you will see five egg giff images, these will start to load thumbnails. Your PSP may freeze and reset. Just keep retrying and ChickHEN R2 will load up….But if you see flashing colors, your PSP will reboot into ChickHEN your homebrew ready!

With ChickHEN R2 loaded now starts the fun part. (P.S You can put your PSP into standby now so you don’t have to go through the whole process again)

Recommended homebrew games and emulators for ChickHEN. As tested by us:

PSP-3000 Running Metal Slug GBA

PSP Emulators like UO gPSP Kai 3.3 and Capcom Play System 1 Emulator which gives you great classic games like Street Fighter II. And homebrew games like REminiscence (Flashback) and Tyrian Open.

Trouble shooting:

Q: I can’t get ChickHEN to boot, It always freezes.
A: Keep trying, make sure your PSP has firmware 5.03

A: Don’t shut down your PSP, use standby to keep ChickHEN loaded.

Does it work on PSP 3001 and I have tried it so far 20 times and it just shut down, i’ve done what was said to turn off and reset but nothing. any help would be great.

uhh 5th post bout this in 30 min. reset ur factory defualts and turn of umd cache an auto start and should work 1st time around.

uhh maybe you should hang on every post if your annoyed so easily by repetition. This hack is a clunky piece of crap at best. It takes me a minimum of 30 minutes to get this hack to work every time i have to run it. No disrespect to the programmers but elegant hack this is not!

try adding three jpegs into the chickhen folder. Then give it 30 seconds or so to load the thumnails. Then press down on the d pad to scroll through the images. Like I said below even with this hack to the hack it still requires MAJOR patience! But its the only way I’ve gotten it to work on my late model 2001.

I will be attempting to install this “upgrade” to my psp2000 this weekend…..if it works, you guys are friggin’ gods ! ! !

Sorry to ask a stupid question, but what is the best resource for downloading “back-up” games for my psp? I want to be sure I don’t get a d@mn virus (if that’s possible).

Ok, I am a bit concerned about this whole bricking thing……How can I figure out if my psp can be hacked? Do I need to open up the unit to inspect the mobo type, or is there a way to check it through one of the menu’s?

PLEASE HELP!!!

I have no idea what bricking really is, but it sounds as if my unit will not be usable if this happens!

Hi, I can’t thank U all enough for this.

My PS is running with ur CFW now, but I can’t get in to the recovery mode. also when I try to update to the
5.00 M33-6, its says error that my PSP is already running in the latest FW… It is because I place the 5.00 OFW
not the 5.03 OFW in the UPDATE directory?

Please can you point me to the right direction?

got a japanese and uk version. it works on the UK psp but cannot get it to work on the japanese psp! I tried so many times.

I have a psp 3005, so here’s tuto for those that don’t have a psp 3001, since the 3001 is already set to english. Turn off the UMD cache like they said, and the UMD autostart. Now if your using a PSP other than the US version, so any other version than the 3001 would have their current settings of their character set language altered to whatever their countries language or their psp’s language is. Now change the character set language to the first one, which is the US (437) or something like that, just to keep it safe change also the system language to english (sorry to the other psp users that don’t know or speak english). After I did this ChickHen’s success rate increased like a charm, now I’m able to load it with ease. I just hope that this helps everyone, especially those with other psp’s from other countries other than the US]]

assuming you already have the chickHEN on your psp.
From the folder X:/PSP/PHOTO/CHICKHEN copy the chickHENa.jpg and make 4 jpeg copies rename it to chickHENe.jpg up to chickHENh. here’s the tricky part go to photo click on chickHEN wait until you see the “egg in the box” then scroll down immediately. don’ do anything just wait for the green screen. that’s it. I hope this helps.

Actually I think you can try this for all psp’s but the 3001 should be already in this setting though, but give it a whirl, there’s no harm in trying new things….

I forgot to mention that it works way better if when you open up the photo folder where the files are stored, and just let it load, so when you open up the folder don’t touch anything just let the pictures load and magic!!!

Brilliant! I have a Japanese ta-088 v3. Like advised I set my Character Set to Multilingual Latin 1. Then set my language to Japanese. Chickhen R2 loaded on 2nd atempt after trying hours of other methods!

Hi everybody, I found a way to make ChikHEN-R2 Work at 1st try in my PSP 2010.
1) Go to Photo
2) Open Memory Stick
3) Wait until egg image charge in the folder
4) Press right and wait until 1st egg image charge
5) Then press left quickly
6) Now right again and wait don’t move
7) Ready the HEN Loads!

I do it with oficial HEN PSP 2010 with PES09 pack.
Work 100% of time.

i have installed the 5.03 chikhen but i cant play an ISO (Final Fantasy Crisis Core) what did i miss? some1 can help?

I found that changing the CharacterSet to Multilingual Latin 1 helped me to get the Hen running on Jap release 3K

I have found 2 methods that work to get this to work for me on a PSP 2000 and 3000.

1st method is:
copy the files to the PHOTO folder
click X on PHOTO and just let it sit and load the pictures, dont move any d-pad buttons
if this method works for you, it will turn green and its done, congrats!

this worked for me on a sony 1gb and a sandisk 4gb

2nd method:
copy the files to the PHOTO folder, but this time add 4 extra jpg (i just copied and pasted chickhene.jpg, f, g, h etc)
this time when you click X on PHOTO, let it run and do not hit any d-pad buttons.
as the pictures load, watch the memory stick access light.
when it is done flashing, scroll down and let the last 2 pics load while holding the d-pad down
it will flash green and it worked, congrats!

this worked for me on a sandisk 2gb, could not get 1st easier method to work

it should never take you more than 1 try to do this successfully, and you dont have to mess with any settings or restore default settings or any other run around.

if you are having problems, try these 2 methods on your card. if it still doesnt work, get a new card and try these 2 methods. you can always return the cards if they dont work for a refund so no big loss. it is best to find a memory stick that will load this program easily, they are out there.

hope this info can help someone. if you find it useful, let someone else know.

what happens when my screen turns black when i try load the slim.tiff or when

Remember though that once you open the ChickHen folder where the images are stored just let it load and don’t touch or scroll through anything, this way its success rates are doubled.

Sorry, can’t help you there if you’re already in OFW 5.51 then it’s too late since ChickHen was designed to run only for OFW 5.03 and below. Sorry.

I have a psp 3004 And this trick has worked a few times. But now it seems dead on me.

Ive tried all listed above, disable cach, waith for /\ -box and so on…

Ive ben trying to add/remove .jpg to the folder.. does it have anything to do with the ammount of images it loads in thumbnails? the more the better?

As someone that doesnt know hacking at all it seems strange that code can work and not work different times.. code should stay the same? In other words, if this works once, why doesnt it all the time! >_<

FOR ALL THOSE PPL WHO SPENT HOURS OF THEIR LIFE TRYING TO GET CHIKHEN TO WORK…. I HAVE A POSSIBLE SOLUTION:

It took me about 12 hours to get ChickHEN to FINALLY work
but when i got it to work, a file “egghunt.bin” appeared in my psp
Then for some reason my psp turned off and i checked the system settings and it went back to nomal.
After 2-3 tries ChickHEN worked again!
I’m not sure if it wil work for everyone but it also worked when i copied “egghunt.bin” onto my friends psp
It also only took him 2-3 tries to get ChickHEN to work

My post is gone anyway i hope theres R2 Smoother like R1. Still i cant load R2. I do all the tricks and tips but still no chance. I just lucky load it once in 1 try and after that I hope R3 is easier to load than R2

Guys stop getting mad, this is how you get Chickhen to work
1) Download Chickhen R2 and put all the stuff in the neccessary files and delete any other photos, music, and videos on your psp
2) Reset your psp to default settings
3) Don’t use a wallpaper or change the theme from original
4) turn UMD autostart, UMD cache, and usb charge off
5) Click on the chickhen folder on your psp and then quickly scroll down to slim.ttf, your psp should then freeze
6) When your psp boots up again, immediately go to the photos section of the xmb and as soon as you see the chickhen folder open it and scroll down to slim.ttf, your psp will then flash green and you will be in chickhen!

i have a psp here psp3000 4.01 already update the firmware to 5.03, but when i’d tried to use this chickhen2 and load the loader it doesn’t work after pressing the 0 the unit shutdown and when i try to open it the firmware back to 5.03 without chickhen. can somebody here help me on this.

So Mine Worked finally this what I did
I took the battery out then I put exactly 7 images in the chicken folder then I left it in stand by for about 10 mins then I shut off everything everything in the system menu then I tried it and boom it worked

well it worked for the first few times, but why does it crashes while playing a homebrew game and it TURNS OFF by itself, the next thing i know wen i turn it bck ON, the CFW is GONE, so i have to do it all over again to make it a CFW…

wtf is the use of this hack if it is going to end? and we keep on trying again n again so it MIGHT work AGAIN and go back to the OFW AGAIN when its going to get stuck while playing the game AGGGAIIN!
