Guide to running ChickHEN R2 on your PSP-3000 / TA88v3

Finally we have Homebrew on the PSP-3000 or TA88v3 thanks to Davee and Team Typhoon. Here we bring you a small tutorial / guide on how to best set up in order to get it running and fast. Plus some recommend Homebrew Games and Emulators to get you started!

Here’s a quick run down of what we’re doing to need to get ChickHEN:

  • A PSP-3000 or PSP-2000 with firmware 5.03 (This is imperative, you won’t get ChickHEN to ever load with out it!)
  • The lastest ChickHEN release.
  • And a lot of patience

Firstly make sure your PSP-3000 or TA88v3 PSP-2000 has PSP Firmware 5.03 installed. Check in your PSP XMB go to Settings/ System Settings / System infomation. If you don’t have PSP 5.03 installed download it here. Create a folder called UPDATE in PSP/GAME on your memory stick and place the eboot from the archive into the folder. Run the 5.03 Firmware update from GAME / Memory stick and you will have 5.03. The firmware required to run ChickHEN.

Now download the release from here. Open the CHickHEN R2 archive and place the folder inside Slim with gif images into your PSP memory stick location like so PSP/PHOTO (later it will be PSP/PHOTO/ChickHEN). Now place the h.bin into the root of your memory stick pro duo. Where the folders PSP, MUSIC etc are located.

Ok next step place the memory stick into the PSP. We have found this step helps ChickHEN boot with less attempts, go your PSP XMB, to settings and Restore Default Settings. Your PSP will reset, now go back into settings and turn off UMD Auto-Start and UMD Cache. We found ChickHEN loads in 2-3 goes after doing this.

Now go into Photo / Memory Stick and ChickHEN. And wait, you will see five egg giff images, these will start to load thumbnails. Your PSP may freeze and reset. Just keep retrying and  ChickHEN R2 will load up….But if you see flashing colors, your PSP will reboot into ChickHEN your homebrew ready!

With ChickHEN R2 loaded now starts the fun part. (P.S You can put your PSP into standby now so you don’t have to go through the whole process again)

PSP Emulators like UO gPSP Kai 3.3 and Capcom Play System 1 Emulator which gives you great classic games like Street Fighter II. And homebrew games like REminiscence (Flashback) and Tyrian Open.

Trouble shooting:

  • Q: I can’t get ChickHEN to boot, It always freezes.
  • A: Keep trying, make sure your PSP has firmware 5.03
  • Q: How to I keep ChickHEN loaded?
  • A: Don’t shut down your PSP, use standby to keep ChickHEN loaded.

    I got this this to work on my slim psp2003 by turning umd cache and autostart off…however when attempting to start it on my little sisters psp1003PHAT I discovered that there was no umd cache option and therefore the thing wont work. Any ideas????????

    i dont get it…by PSP-3000 / TA88v3, does he mean psp 3000 WITH TA88v3, or u can have either… cuz i thought psp 3000 isnt TA88v3

    Hi! i did exactly like they told me to but when i opened the “ChickHEN” file and scrolled to the bottom it freezed and then turned off. T.T I’ve done it many times but it still doesnt work. Any help plz

    Sometimes I can start ChickHEN, but I can’t play with ISO/CSO files (in chickhen). Can somebody help me? I have a piano black PSP with TA088v3 motherboard.

    For the people with the questions;
    YES, all you need are the 5 files in the ChickHEN folder and the bin file
    YES, It works on a 3000

    To do it:
    Unzip folder
    Put ChickHEN FOLDER into PSP/Photo (The mistake I made was to put the picture only)
    Put the bin file in the main folder (Contains MUSIC, PSP, MP-ROOT)
    Disable UMD auto-start and UMD cache and rest all system settings.
    Go to photo folder in your PSP (Not through USB), open ChickHEN folder and wait a couple of seconds.
    You screen will look like it’s broken, but it isn’t.

    To check if it’s in HEN, go to System Settings.

    That G is the letter in question. Here’s a list of all the letters that the 2000 series ship with and their Motherboards:
    (No Letter) = TA-085v1
    A = TA-085v1 or TA-088v1 (Not 100% sure about TA-085v1)
    C = TA-085v2
    E = TA-085v2 or TA-088v1
    F = TA-088v1 or TA-088v2
    G = TA-088v1 or TA-088v2 or TA-088v3——————————–>my box is G
    J = TA-090v1 (I didn’t completely verify this yet)

    I can confirm, it works on the PSP 3005.
    Do all of the above, set language to english, set character set to english 411 ( or something like that 1st one I think)

    worked on second try after I did this. Would not work until I did this

      just put the folders for homebrew in PSP\GAME and put ISO/CSO in ISO folder at the root of the memstick

I’ve followed your steps above with carefully and repeated many times, but the green screen never come up and it doesn’t work at all, I don’t know what should I do now, anyway I use original Sony MS, the status of my MS is MagicGate supported. Please let me know if I did something wrong……..

    ChickHEN works randomly..ive tried 10 tries before it works again..
    Any other work around solution?

    Hey, I have firmware version 4.34. I wanted to know how I can update to 5.03. I’m pretty sure that if I run the network update, it will bring me to 5.50, exactly what I don’t want.

    Hi guys. I did everything by guide and in settings now says : 5.03 ChickHEN R2 so its all great, but i dled some games and put them in right folder. but when i try to access them from psp it says, data corrupted?! Any ideas?

    sir, i tried your instructions but still i didn’t go through the Green screen..
    after i click the chickHEN folder, it will hang for awhile then it will turn it off..

    some psp’s cant load the chickHEN easily but mine i have tried it just twice and it worked, when i have tried to reboot the process again for three times it easily works for me booting up the chikHEN R2 and then just running the custom firmware enabler v1.0 not flash cause it is just for the first time you are to use the cfw enabler, now i have enjoyed lots of iso and cso, but never use rip ones cause you wouldnt know what part of the certain game the psp will freeze and reboot itself so dont use rips, and thanks a lot to davee for the chickHEN R2, Xenogears and Becus25 for the CFWEnabler v1.0. Perfectly works for me man!
