Guide to running ChickHEN R2 on your PSP-3000 / TA88v3

Finally we have Homebrew on the PSP-3000 or TA88v3 thanks to Davee and Team Typhoon. Here we bring you a small ChickHEN tutorial / guide on how to best set up ChickHEN in order to get it running and fast. Plus some recommend Homebrew Games and Emulators to get you started!

Here’s a quick run down of what we’re doing to need to get ChickHEN:

A PSP-3000 or PSP-2000 with firmware 5.03 (This is imperative, you won’t get ChickHEN to ever load with out it!)

The lastest ChickHEN release.

And a lot of patience

Firstly make sure your PSP-3000 or TA88v3 PSP-2000 has PSP Firmware 5.03 installed. Check in your PSP XMB go to Settings/ System Settings / System infomation. If you don’t have PSP 5.03 installed download it here. Create a folder called UPDATE in PSP/GAME on your memory stick and place the eboot from the archive into the folder. Run the 5.03 Firmware update from GAME / Memory stick and you will have 5.03. The firmware required to run ChickHEN.

Now download the ChickHEN R2 release from here. Open the CHickHEN R2 archive and place the folder inside Slim with gif images into your PSP memory stick location like so PSP/PHOTO (later it will be PSP/PHOTO/ChickHEN). Now place the h.bin into the root of your memory stick pro duo. Where the folders PSP, MUSIC etc are located.

Ok next step place the memory stick into the PSP. We have found this step helps ChickHEN boot with less attempts, go your PSP XMB, to settings and Restore Default Settings. Your PSP will reset, now go back into settings and turn off UMD Auto-Start and UMD Cache. We found ChickHEN loads in 2-3 goes after doing this.

Now go into Photo / Memory Stick and ChickHEN. And wait, you will see five egg giff images, these will start to load thumbnails. Your PSP may freeze and reset. Just keep retrying and ChickHEN R2 will load up….But if you see flashing colors, your PSP will reboot into ChickHEN your homebrew ready!

With ChickHEN R2 loaded now starts the fun part. (P.S You can put your PSP into standby now so you don’t have to go through the whole process again)

Recommended homebrew games and emulators for ChickHEN. As tested by us:

PSP-3000 Running Metal Slug GBA

PSP Emulators like UO gPSP Kai 3.3 and Capcom Play System 1 Emulator which gives you great classic games like Street Fighter II. And homebrew games like REminiscence (Flashback) and Tyrian Open.

Q: I can’t get ChickHEN to boot, It always freezes.
A: Keep trying, make sure your PSP has firmware 5.03

Q: How to I keep ChickHEN loaded?
A: Don’t shut down your PSP, use standby to keep ChickHEN loaded.

As simple as this, just copy the chickhen folder with the gif’s and tiff image inside it into your psp\photo folder. if it does not exist there (photo) then create one. then copy the h.bin file to the root of the m.stick. we now move on to the preparation part. Now turn on your psp, go to system setting, and go to the third option from the most bottom, which is to Restore To Default Settings. Yes to everything and your psp will reboot. Now, do not set anything on the time and date screen. just press the right button until you can save the settings. Now go to your System Settings again, change your UMD Auto Start and UMD Cache to OFF. Well this is optional, you can also go to your Theme Settings and change it to Classic. This is to get your system to load things faster (sometimes i didnt do it either, lol). Now is the last and most important part, loading that chickhen shit!!!

Go to photo menu, enter.
Once you can see the ChickHen folder, remember do not press anything yet.
In 2-3 seconds, a black ‘Options’ box with triangle icon will appear on the bottom-right screen of you psp
(If you didn’t see the box, go back to the photo menu and enter again)
Now is the time to press enter and………..now is the tricky part….

you actually have 2 methods here, it actually works on both methods
normally people will ask you to straight away press the down key to the last image (TIFF)
well if you already tried it hundred times but it still wont load, try this one

after you enter the chickhen folder, DO NOT SCROLL DOWN!!
JUST STAY ON THE 1ST IMAGE AND WAIT UNTIL IT LOADS
if it still do not load, try the scrolling down method 3 times and again the staying up method 3 times while praying to god…. ok

i hardly plays psp games, i only plays pc’s. i just own a game shop that sells this thing, so i need to know more on how to get that thing works rite?….. good luck guys….

thank you very much…i finally able to make it work.i don`t know if it have effect or not but i did it with battery level above 78% and using the scroll to the last gif images.And i guess the timing of pressing the 0 button after the triangle appears also have effect.Once again thank you very much you have made me save 5 dollars and the probability to be blackmail by others.:)

I tried rebooting my PSP 5.03OFW using your instructions but I get stuck when I go to photos all the images got stuck and the whole unit tun off. I badly need to restore my game. I hope you can help me. thank you very muc.

PSP come out with firmware 5.03 and ABOVE are not hackable by chickHEN. Also it can not been downgrade anymore.

thanks bro the method of scrolling down to the last image worked but before I came across your post I stayed on the 1st image for about 10 times and it kept freezing up. This is my first time hacking a PSP 3000 and the owner had his PSP on 5.02 so it made it more easier for me since I loaded OFW 5.03 then used ChickHEN R2. Thanks for your help I hack PSP 1000′s and 2000′s and this was my 1st attempt of hacking a 3000. Time to run a CFW homebrew now! =)

I really need your help in hacking my new PSP 3000 (japanese model).

I bought it one week ago with firmware 5.01 installed
I updated to 5.03.

put UMD auto start OFF and UMD Cache OFF
go to system information (display : System software : Version 5.03)
then go to Photos and memory stick and scroll down the picture with key down hold.
I also tried to go slowly after the preview of each egg image was loaded.

I just cannot understand why my psp want not load the cfw chickhen R2.

Anyone can help me ?

I will give you some guide to doing the chickHEN hack.
I learn this from my psp dealer.

when you are already put the “chickhen” folder into your psp (root:/psp/photo/chickhen/).
Now what you need to do is turn on the psp, move to the photo icon. Under the photo icon press “O” to enter, after that scroll to the memory stick(make sure there have no other picture inside the memory stick).
Under the memory stick icon, press right bottom and you will see the box.
While the ‘egg’ icon show onto of the box, count 2.5 second(or after the “option” was show) and press right bottom.
Now your psp will flash with green colour screen and restart.
DONE!!!

I was helping my friend load the chickHEN and I found out something. When the chickHEN photos start to load, do not scroll up or down.This way, it loads with just one attempt.

having hard time loading chickHEN?
try this one:
restore default setting
then go to settings
turn off “umd cache”
turn off “umd auto start”
go to “character set”
choose “US(437)” or “Multi Latin 1(850)”
then load chickHEN
when loading chickHEN:
open “PHOTO”, don’t push any button until the egg appears
then open the chickHEN folder( you dont have to push any button,just wait)
PS. when your having a problem loading chickHEN, just change the “character set” to US or Multi
and also change your “theme” to original..hope this help! ^^

HI all, poor chance but lets give it a go: is it at all possible to load CFW on a PSP 2004 (European model) with OFW 5.5? I am pretty sure it has motherboard below TA88v3, as it has a date code 8a.. But as far as i can tell the exploit of chickhen doenst work on ofw 5.5. Am i right or can somebody make me happy with another way around? Thanks

Ive found something myself that has helped a LOT. Maybe not for everyone but try it anyway!

Just turn the Color Space to “Normal” before you run the chickhen folder with the images.

Thats it, it worked almost every time after that and before it worked once out of about 50 tries. Hope that helped

If you can’t load chickHEN, try out this one.
I’ve tried a few and most worked every time i tried it. Until I hit the 4th or 5th time. Then they just wouldn’t work.
I’ve found this one which has worked almost every time i do it (90% of the time).
NOTE: I have only tried this on my PSP3006 so don’t blame me if this doesn’t work.

(1) Enter the Photo menu and memory stick.
(2) Click circle (or X for all those english base ones) to enter into the ChickHEN folder.
(3) Now wait on the first photo/file until the black ”options” box,then scroll down to the second photo.
(4) Now again, wait until the little black box shows up but this time, scroll down completely and hold the ”down” directional button.
(5) The screen should flash green and ChickHEN will be loaded. Enter your gen-b or whatever and play until you die.

Should that not work try it again 2 or 3 times. It should work.
HOWEVER DON’T PANIC IF IT DOESN’T.
There is a slightly modified way which is no harder than the one above.

(1) Enter the Photo menu and memory stick.
(2) Click circle (or X for all those english base ones) to enter into the ChickHEN folder.
(3) On the first photo, instead of waiting for the box to show up, IMMEDIATELY scroll down to the second box.
(4) On the second photo, wait for the little black box to appear then scroll down completely and hold down the ”down” directional button.
(5) Screen will flash green and ChickHEN is loaded.

You install the ChickHEN before you activate the CFWEnabler. Otherwise it won’t work and would risk bricking your PSP.

I hope I get a reply. I have a fat psp .. the one tht needs a switch to open the UMD case and the one that has the WLAN switch on the left bottom SIDE. I put the PHAT file in the pictures and everything … but when I went on my psp to the picture folder, it says that it’s CORRUPTED DATA … PLEASE HELP!

NOW IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART…… ONCE YOU CLICK ON CHICKHEN DONT PRESS ANYTHING UNTIL YOU SEE THE BLACK” /\ OPTIONS” BOX

ONCE YOU SEE THAT BOX POP UP, IMMEDIATELY HOLD THE ARROW (DOWN) ALL THE WAY WITHOUT LETTING GO OF IT,,,, !!!!BOOM!!!! YOU NOW GET THE GREEEN SCREEN

WORKS 8/10 TIMES FOR ME IT WORKS ALL THE TIME..

I read your post, and I tried my psp for almost 50 times. No luck. I’m not sure what might be wrong. I have psp-2005 with firmware 5.03 and running chickhen. I formated my stick . Of course this was bught in korea. is that could make a difference. Any help will be appriciated.

(((Here is a way to use ChickHen R2 with no problems…. usually works all the time, with some exceptions. I have a psp 3005, so here’s tuto for those that don’t have a psp 3001, since the 3001 is already set to english. Turn off the UMD cache like they said, and the UMD autostart. Now if your using a PSP other than the US version, so any other version than the 3001 would have their current settings of their character set language altered to whatever their countries language or their psp’s language is. Now change the character set language to the first one, which is the US (437) or something like that, just to keep it safe change also the system language to english (sorry to the other psp users that don’t know or speak english). After I did this ChickHen’s success rate increased like a charm, now I’m able to load it with ease. I just hope that this helps everyone, especially those with other psp’s from other countries other than the US.)))

Thanks for the input, I have put 5.03 and chicken hen r2 on my 3001 and managed to run a gba emulator successfully. I took probably 15 reboots to get the green screen, but now I leave it in standby mode. Other than emulators can I run anything else with this, ei; IRShell or tightvnc?

In the steps above you say that there should be 5 egg gif’s. Im seeing four (4) and the fith (5) says it’s a tiff but before that image loads my psp freezes and turns off. So I dont know if it’s an egg or not. Iv tried many times and end up with the same results. Any one have any thoughts on this? Thanks….Dee

same here but my 5th one says it’s a slim.tiff and the image doesnt load. and it freezes and turns off, stupid psp. my friend told me chickHEN reacts differently to every single psp, is that true?

having hard time loading chickHEN?
try this one:
restore default setting
then go to settings
turn off “umd cache”
turn off “umd auto start”
go to “character set”
choose “US(437)” or “Multi Latin 1(850)”
then load chickHEN
when loading chickHEN:
open “PHOTO”, don’t push any button until the egg appears
then open the chickHEN folder( you dont have to push any button,just wait)
PS. when your having a problem loading chickHEN, just change the “character set” to US or Multi
and also change your “theme” to original..hope this help!

Try this one – 100% Working (hopefully…)

As simple as this, just copy the chickhen folder with the gif’s and tiff image inside it into your psp\photo folder. if it does not exist there (photo) then create one. then copy the h.bin file to the root of the m.stick. we now move on to the preparation part. Now turn onyour psp, go to system setting, and go to the third option from the most bottom, which is to Restore To Default Settings. Yes to everything and your psp will reboot. Now, do not set anything on the time and date screen. just press the right button until you can save the settings. Now go to your System Settings again, change your UMD Auto Start and UMD Cache to OFF. Well this is optional, you can also go to your Theme Settings and change it to Classic. This is to get your system to load things faster (sometimes i didnt do it either, lol). Now is the last and most important part, loading that chickhen shit!!!

Go to photo menu, enter.
Once you can see the ChickHen folder, remember do not press anything yet.
In 2-3 seconds, a black ‘Options’ box with triangle icon will appear on the bottom-right screen of you psp
(If you didn’t see the box, go back to the photo menu and enter again)
Now is the time to press enter and………..now is the tricky part….

you actually have 2 methods here, it actually works on both methods
normally people will ask you to straight away press the down key to the last image (TIFF)
well if you already tried it hundred times but it still wont load, try this one

after you enter the chickhen folder, DO NOT SCROLL DOWN!!
JUST STAY ON THE 1ST IMAGE AND WAIT UNTIL IT LOADS
if it still do not load, try the scrolling down method 3 times and again the staying up method 3 times while praying to god…. ok

for psp 3000 PW 100v (Jap Version) – after reset to default settings, change character set to Multi Latin US

nope… it will not work, you have to sit back and relax and pray for someone to release or have guts to create a game exploit in 5.50 and above OFW’s…

What you need to do is downgrade your OFW to 5.03 then it will work.
You downgrade by going into Pandora Mode (Service Mode). Given that you have a PSP-3000 you need a different Pandora Battery than those used on PSP-1000.

I think the “Datel Max Power Digital Tool” is the one that works on PSP-3000 and 88v3.
The Pandora Battery that says “TOOL” on it only works for the older PSP-2000 and the PSP-1000

On your Memory Stick you need to place the 5.03 firmware when using the Pandora Trick. After you install it, go to this forum again and you’re ready =)
