[Old Method] Hardmodding Slim Batteries
« on: October 11, 2007, 10:40:47 AM »
I got M33 3.71 installed on my Slim PSP with only the content of my retail package, and the noobie installer. The Slim PSP battery can be physically modded in the same way that the Fat one was, only instead of pulling up the #5 Pin on the battery, you pull up the #4 one(as it only has 4 on the slim version). You will then have to use your home charger to play your PSP(unless you re-solder the pin after you're done) or start your PSP up with the battery out, then put the battery in and unplug your charger.. you'll have to have the battery out every time you turn your PSP on, or it'll just try to go into recovery mode every time. I had zero problems with this method and my PSP works perfectly. The #4 pin is the one closest to where the battery connects to the PSP. Once the battery is apart, you'll have to lift up the PCB to see the chip labelled "iC04".. that is the chip that you disconnect the pin from. It's really really small, so you must be careful when doing it. I used a sewing needle to lift it up.
-----------------------------
--------------------------*-|
------PCB-----[ic04 chip]-{=}<--connector to PSP
-----------------------------|
-----------------------------
The Asterisks mark the area of the 4th pin that must be disconnected. I disconnected it on both sides of the chip for good measure, but one side should do the trick. Hope this helps those out that ONLY have access to their Slim PSP out of the box. I would put up actual pics, but my internet is temporarily shut down >.< I will next week, tho, unless someone else does it first. Give proper credits to me for this find, when telling people on other sites about it :P

I have a couple of questions.

1) After using the modded battery, will I be able to use another unmodded battery as my normal and run my PSP as I once did, but now with CFW?

2) Is this essentially creating a slim Pandora PSP batt.?

3) Finally, I know you mention the Totali newb batt. program, Could you elaborate along the lines of what and how this program works?

Thank you very much I know I have been bothering you alot, but I assure you it will stop soon LOL. Thanks Again!

1. Yes, you will be able to use an unmodded battery without any problems after you have completed the CFW install.
2. Yes.. basically a Pandora Battery
3. http://dl.qj.net/TOTALNewbi-easyInstaller-PSP-Tools-Utilities-%28on-PC%29/pg/12/fid/14749/catid/193 <---Short description of the tool on that page along with a "Download" button.  It's 135MB.  Download it, unzip it, run the Start.exe and it will walk you through step by step.  It's very easy to do.  Before doing so, you will want to make a copy of your Memory Stick's PSP folder so you can keep your game saves and such.  This program basically makes your Memory Stick work alongside the modded battery in the same way that the kits that Dev's/repair workers have to put the PSP into recovery mode.  The TotalNewbi installer also comes with a copy of M33 3.71 CFW, you'll have the option of a few different FW's to install when making the Magic Memory Stick, and I would go with option #4, which is Dark_Alex's M33 3.71 CFW.  Once you are done with the installation process, take out your memory stick and turn off the PSP.  Put the MS back into the PSP and then put your modded battery in.  The PSP should then turn itself on.  Once it's on(the Green power light will be on, but a black screen.. you'll know it's working right if when you do the next step, it starts reading the MS), hit the X button on your PSP to start the install of the firmware.  When it's done, it'll shut off by itself.  Then, just pull out the modded battery and put a different one in or use your wall charger without a battery.  When the system starts up, you'll want to go to your settings and reformat the memory stick so you can use it like a normal one again.  Then copy your PSP folder back onto it from your PC.  Voila.. you can now go into your Settings->PSP Info and see the 3.71 M33 listed as the software version.... without ever having to touch/see/smell anything other than what came in the box with your Slim PSP(Unless of course your PSP didn't come with a PRO Duo stick.. in which case, you need to get one anyhow lol.. at least 256MB recommended.. I got the Daxter combo, so it came with a 1GB Pro Duo)

Just taken the case off.

Lifting up the PCB

The TINY black chip at the top of this picture is the one that needs to be modded.  It will be the pin closest to the top, by the PSP connection thingy.

Little bit closer pic.. my camera sucks, sorry.  The "IC04" label on the PCB will be on the opposite side of the chip that you remove the pin from.  So find that label and then go to the pin on the complete opposite end and disconnect it.

So, closest to the PSP connector and farthest from the IC04 label, two things to look for, so nobody should mess this up, unless you have really shaky hands lol :P To reconnect it and have a working normal battery again, you would need to be pretty damn good at soldering, you'll see what I mean when you see the actual size of this chip.  However, if you feel like you can do it, just resolder the pin back to the exact spot that it was to start with and your battery will be just like before.[/img]

I upgraded by mistake the fw to the 3.71 official, does your method still work in this case ? I read somewhere else on the forum that the pandora battery exploit only work with the 3.60...

Thanks for your informations in advance.

yes you can still install cw to your slim

you need the "universal unbricker" for slim and fat psp

this is also known as cemetary v3

and is the only version of the pandora software that supports the psp slim lcd screen

once you boot it up its just a case of hitting the "x" button and 3.71 m33-2 installs regardless of what firmware version you have

Can I still use the TOTALNewbi easyInstaller on a psp with the official 3.71 ?

Sorry for my noob lack of knowledge...trying to learn though...

Another dumb question, the nand dump can be done after or before the pandora ?

i am unsure about the answer to your first question

as for the nand dump it needs the pandora battery and software installed

nand dump is done from the same menu as the installation of custom firmware

Very carefully, starting at the back of the battery away from the connector side, work your way around the battery with a very small flat screw driver or anything small and fairly hard looking for a weak spot in the gluing of the case.  Once you've gotten a piece of your tool inside the battery, slowly but firmly pull it along the seam to break the casing loose.  Once I got my knife into the casing, I even pried a little bit at the corners by rotating the knife(like turning a screw driver one way and then back the other way).  The casing design is such that the top of the case fits down over the bottom, meaning your tool is going to be going in, up and away from the components of the battery, as they all fit well inside the bottom of the casing.

And yes, once you've installed, all you have to do is resolder the pin and be on your way.  According to the schematics of the battery's chip, that someone posted on another forum yesterday, the only pin you should have to take off would be the top one shown in my crude diagram.  So now, it should look like this:
-----------------------------
--------------------------*-|
------PCB-----[ic04 chip]-{=}<--connector to PSP
----------------------------|
-----------------------------
I had actually disconnected the other one first and it didn't work, so I did the other one and it worked.  I wasn't completely sure if you needed both sides of the chip to be disconnected or if I just got the wrong one first and was lucky that the battery wasn't ruined.  It would appear that if you want to re-solder you'll only have to do one pin instead of two.  Hope this helps.
