HOW 2 HACK URE PSP USIN ONLY THE RETAIL PACKAGE WIV LATEST CFW, 3.80M33-UPDATE 5 (NO PSP REQUIRED)

Question : I want to install homebrew on my psp slim but i have no access to another psp, can i install it by just using the retail package? Huh

Answer : Yes you can, well nearly (?) - you'll need another memory card.

Ok,  you've got your brand new shiny psp slim but you want homebrew on it. Just follow this guide, it's for noobz and maybe pro's. Lol.
IT USES THE LATEST CUSTOM FIRMWARE, 3.80m33-5 AND THIS GUIDE WILL WORK ON ANY PSP VERSION. IT'S THE EASIEST SINCE NO SPARE PSP IS REQUIRED AND THE SOFTWARE IS VERY EASY TO USE.
Im sorry i don’t have any images up, i was just a bit busy.
AND I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY DAMAGE THIS GUIDE MIGHT DO TO YOUR PSP, BATTERY AND MEMORY CARD AND I ALSO TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY INCORRECT INFORMATION THAT MIGHT BE IN THIS GUIDE
because i am new to this forum, new to writing a new post and new to hacking psp’s . But truss, this guide will work.

THINGS YOU'LL NEED:
1. ANOTHER MEMORY CARD (The retail memory card is too small) - It should be a genuine Sony Pro Duo one but others may work - 256mb - 4 GB should work fine even an m2 micro with an ms pro duo adaptor will work. eg. sandsik.
2. ANOTHER BATTERY (optional) must be genuine sony or similar, made in china or japan and FULLY CHARGED.
3. SOME SOFTWARE - this contains the hacking files, cfw etc which will be installed on the memory card.

NOW IF YOU WANT TO INSTALL 3.71M33-4 CUSTOM FIRMWARE FOLLOW THE GUIDE BELOW, IT WILL ALSO SHOW YOU HOW TO UPDATE TO 3.80M33-5. BUT IF YOU WANT TO GO STRAIGHT TO 3.80M33-5 CUSTOM FIRMWARE GO TO THE BOTTOM OF THIS GUIDE.

STEP1: download the software needed, follow this link - http://dl.qj.net/TOTALNewbi-easyInstaller-PSP-Tools-Utilities-(on-PC)/pg/12/fid/14749/catid/193

It basically modifies your memory card and turns it into a magic memory card

MAKE SURE YOU ARE USING WINDOWS XP 32BIT , IM NOT SURE IF IT WORKS ON VISTA.

the download is big and is a bit slow, so leave it on flashget or whatever. After the download has finished, extract the file somewhere, eg. Desktop.
Forget about the downloaded file now, just remember where you put it and move to the next step.

STEP2 : You'll need a genuine sony battery, made in china or japan. The battery will be used to put your psp. You’ll need to MODIFY the battery to get your psp into service mode (don’t worry about service mode at the moment).

Japanese batteries also work as confirmed by Pheonix05  Wink, i wasnt sure about it before, lol

Basically, you open up the battery using a screwdriver or a knife and you have have to DISCONNECT A PIN. Then it has become a magic battery or a Pandora battery.

Now There’s 2 options here:

Option 1: If your good at electronic etc, you can use your original retail battery and modify it, install homebrew on the psp then after installation has finished, you can return the battery back to normal by re-soldering the pin. otherwise if you try to use the psp normally, it will just keep entering into service mode.

Option 2: If you’re not good with this kind of stuff then buy a datel tool battery, around £ 14 off ebay or amazon. This is just a normal battery which has already been modified (one of its pins has been disconnected) . The battery can be reserved and used later on if you want to hack someone else’s psp. Buy whichever size you want.(fat or slim)

Follow this link on how to modify the battery - http://www.pspmod.com/forums/hardware/26181-guide-all-pandora-battery-hardmod-pictures.html

Once you’ve modified tha battery, move on to the next step. Don’t put your battery into the psp right now. Just LEAVE IT having an orgasm.

STEP3. You’ve got your memory card now so insert it into the psp slim and then connect ure psp to your pc and then run the application, the total newbie installer which was downloaded previously and extracted. Just double click on start.exe in the folder and a window will pop up.

Follow the On Screen Instructions in the DOS window. FOLLOW CAREFULLY.

1) Press any key to continue.

2) Format your Memory Stick (make sure you have it backed up if you want anything saved). Then press any key to continue.

2) Connect the PSP to PC type the drive letter of the PSP into the DOS window when it ask for it. Then press ENTER key.

3) You now will get a message that says "Insert new disc for drive (your drive letter) and press enter when ready. You should already have the Memory card in so just press ENTER. It will then start verifying the Memory Stick.

4) Press ENTER for NONE when it ask for a Volume label.

5) It will then warn you that your about to format drive (your drive letter) and all data will be lost. Type Y and then press Enter.

6) the next prompt you get will tell you to take out the Memory card FIRST then disable the USB connection. Then press any key to continue.

7) The next prompt will tell you to put the Memory Stick back into the PSP and then enable the USB connection. Then press any key to continue.

Cool you now will have a menu option to select what you want to do. Choose option 4 Universal Unbricker (Universal Unbricker for FAT and SLIM it's also a 3.71 M33 CFW installer).

The necessary files will then be written onto the Memory Stick. After it has finished writing the files you will get a question. Just type Y and ENTER to finish the installation of files to the memory card and It will then say "Write MS BOOT CODE" then press any key to continue.

You have now created a Magic Memory card.

Now, disconnect you PSP and then put your modified battery and it’ll power on and a menu should come up.

Press [] button to make a NAND backup of the psp. This should be done just in case anything goes wrong. It is basically a backup of the psp's structure and ipl etc. The NAND backup gets dumped into the root of the memory stick and it takes a while.
Press X to install 3.71 M33-2 to the PSP or
press O to install 3.71 official firmware to the PSP.

After it has finished installing the files you can then turn off the PSP and replace the Battery with the normal 1. If you modified the Battery you will need to unmodifiy it to get it back to normal use. Lol.

If you see some messed up screen just do the following:

turn on psp and press R to activate recovery mode
Goto advanced
Select format flash1 and restore settings.
then restart and psp will be arrite.

And that’s it, You've just installed 3.71 m33 cfw. Tongue

TO UPGRADE TO 3.80M33, simply download these 2 files first,
http://dax.st/380_m33.rar    and    http://pspslimhacks.com/psp-slim/PSP-Firmware-380.zip

STEP 1.

Extract the files somewhere on your PC and copy the UPDATE folder into your psp in  /PSP/GAME/

2. Then put the official 3.80 firmware in the same update folder.
3. RENAME THE OFFICIAL FIRMWARE TO "380.PBP".
4. Run the update from the psp's xmb and the psp will be restarted with 3.80 cfw.

STEP 2

Now to update to 3.80m33-5 simply....

1. Firstly download this file, http://dax.st/380_m33update2.rar
2. Extract and copy the UPDATE folder to /PSP/GAME
3. And update using the psp's xmb.

After thats done, the psp will restart and then just update with same steps above but this time install http://dax.st/380m33_3.rar, then
http://dax.st/380m33_4.rar, then finally update with http://dax.st/380m33update5.rar. Install in this order

that's it.

3.80M33-5 ONLY

TO go straight to 3.80m33-5 simply download the 3.80m33-5 easyinstaller and it will create a magic memory card for you

download link: http://www.sendspace.com/file/oe5v0f

that' all 2 it  Cheesy.

If something happens and your psp is completely bricked, dont worry start your psp and press L+R+HOME+start to restore nand from nand-dump.bin and your psp should be unbricked then install the cfw by pressing X.

I hope this guide will be useful. If i have made any mistakes, correct me. and if my tutorial is manure, tell me!

Oh yeah and this guide willl work on both the fat and slim psp's. Happy Hacking  Wink Cheesy

like the problem im having with a black screen popping up when I stick my jigkick battery in with the mms, any suggestions?

at the black screen, i decided to press X anyways, and the mem stick light flashed so i just let it run. the psp started making some noises, so i jsut let it run. when the noises died down and the lights stopped flashing, the power light turned off. i powered it back on with the reg battery, and checked my system info. system software - 3.71 M33 =]

Shaf,
As far as slim PSP tutorials are concerned, this is the absolute best ! Cool

The amount of crap tutorials and especially blurry, blair witch-like vids out there (seriously, some people need learn what a fkn tripod is) is amazing.

Some background:
I've modded lots of consoles: Nintendos, PS X/2s and tons of xboxes but no PSPs. Actually, I've never followed the scene at all so deciding to mod my nephew's Simpson's Ed. slim was a bit of a challenge, information wise.

I didn't want to buy a modded battery and didn't have access to another PSP so lot's of googling lead me here Smiley

Sacrificing the original battery wasn't a problem (the unit came with a double capacity 3rd party pack) but initially I was hoping to be able to do a full softmod, well, that was before I learned what firmware is in what PSP ed. and what it can do.

Anyhow, the tutorial and software worked great. Some things that I found:
  • If you leave a UMD in the device (but auto boot is off in XMB -> setting) everything works fine lol
  • After the NAND backup, (about 3-5 minutes of mem card activity) the unit switches off. At this point repeat the process by removing the magic battery and reinserting and then pressing X

After changing the firmware, I then ghosted the Memory Stick (about 95mb with the 65mb NAND Backup) just in case I mod another Slim sometime. Finished off by updating to 3.71 M33v4 and ripping the Simposons game the unit came with to test playback of ISOs on Memory card - works well.

Next step - find out what else can be customized, maybe load some other homebrew just to see how it all works, even though I have to give it back in a week or so Smiley  Any suggestions for 'essential' apps are welcome!

One last thing, being a n00b when it comes to opening the battery, I wasn't quite as careful with the x-acto as I should have been  Roll Eyes and pierced the cell so here's the resultant magic battery.
It's made from the original s110 slim battery pack, GND pin desoldered and powered by a 3.6 900 mAh AA battery LOL :

Looks like hell but it worked just fine Cheesy Tongue

haha, lol

woah hex, great good job lol.
ir shell is a very good homebrew application, truss, you can do so much things with it, eg. if you've got wifi at home, u can stream iso's from comp to psp, infinite storage of iso's. lol and more.
psp filer, it's like a windows browser, lets you browse file and wifi's them to other psp's.

i wish there was some kind of psp media centre edition. lol

haha, blair witch like video's. lol. true say.
yeah psp is a challenge, information wise.lol

oh yeah, the psp switches off after the nand backup. so reinsert the battery and the psp will start and install cfw by pressing X.

im bit confused wiv the nand backup. i herd u gt 2 types, one's a physical and the other's a logical one. which 1's which Huh

anyway juss backup your nand. lol

I installed it and it's pretty sweet. The Slim has no IR but I got the wifi access going for streaming form the PC and the filebrowser is handy. It can play mp3 during games launched from the MS so that's cool Cheesy

True! I was hoping to find something like that and get DivX playback. I installed the XBMC remote interface/extender though and used the PSP to control the xbox video playback lol This works better than the pure xbmc web interface too, which I used to access from my phone.

Ha, yer I dunno Cheesy The backup was 65Mb so it must back up XMB, personal settings and possibly firmware. I just did it in case I did something horribly wrong and I lost the lot.

I have to give it back to my nephew in a day or so but it is so easy to mod that I'm tempted to get a Vader ed slim and play round a bit more!  Grin

That's another way to pandora the battery, it's a SOFTmod so you dont have to crack open the battery...
but will it work with 3.7?
if so will that process be sufficient enough to install m33?

YEAH, It will work on any psp with custom firmware but i think tha psp might need the 1.5 addon.
