Action Replay is cheating itself
Remember Datel’s Action Replay for the PSP? Upon inspection by Dark_AleX and VoidPointer, it appears that the $40 device actually contains the IPL used in Pandora within the supplied memory stick.
Datel’ Action Replay does uses code that isn’t from itself, code that isn’t distributed to be used the way they use it anyway. The code involving this terms is, for first instance, the Pandora forged IPL block, and on second place but of course not less important, Booster’s IPL SDK.
Datel doesn’t seem to give any credit to the original Pandora developers at all.
Here’s some more interesting things to note; from Alek’s blog:
- It has been confirmed that Datel’ Action replay does interfere on the Custom Firmware code
- They use a bigger memory footprint due to the graphics involved in it, and it’s interesting also to mention that they had a pretty small database, that being compared it to cwcheat one, this first one isn’t even a database tbh.
So what do you think?
I suggest sticking to CWCheat for those who have CFW.

That’s just dirty. Lawsuit please!

I Dont get why people are surprised. They never gave credit to the Developers when they made the tool battery/Battery service tool.
November 6, 2008 at 2:36 am
Yeah, I know. I mean, if the original developers aren’t going to profit off of it, someone will. Especially if the source code is released.
November 6, 2008 at 2:37 am
Not to say that the source code shouldn’t be released, because I like the open source culture and it would be a shame if people stopped it just because someone else was profiting off of it.

I’m serious. DAX should start releasing stuff under GNU or some other license to prevent Datel and other companies from doing this.
November 6, 2008 at 4:11 am
Thats complete bullshit HOMEBREW IS FREE datel are just greedy they should issue a public apolagee to the original creators

Thats just typical the big company, steals the small guys hard work….Bastards
November 7, 2008 at 2:32 am
personally i never saw how they do so many things, and its legal xD like the Pandora battery they sold… how the hell is that a real “tool” it only has 2 uses
fixing bricks
and installing custom firmware… and 99/100 people will do the latter in both cases, but above all, even if there is no license you can sue, and win VS a company like Datel because even if you dont have what is needed to be required for a law suit, they CAN prove they made it, and they CAN prove they stole it, and their image will be killed, and sales will die, the sad thing is, DAX puts in hard work, for mere respect and gratitude and people have to ruin it :\

I’m not overly surprised, but I am extremely offended; and I didn’t have anything with the development of the IPL. The ironic part, in my opinion, is that the home brew scene, especially the major developers, are criticized and harassed by Sony and sometimes the press. Yet when a corporation does it, Sony condones it and the product is sold everywhere.
There is something important to note here though: this is empirical evidence that real developers with true talent don’t work at companies like these thieving cock-suckers. No, real developers understand the true purpose and potential of technology like the PSP. They know all technological devices should be (allowed to be) used to their fullest potential, for any purpose.
True innovators aren’t “profit oriented,” they share a passion for cutting edge, truly amazing technology witch perpetuates science and gives us the power to do that witch we never thought possible. Furthermore, they understand that when someone purchases a system, weather it’s a PSP, XBOX, PC/MAC, MP3 Player, even a fucking cell phone, that person has the right to customize and use that device in any manner they please. Shackling technology the way Sony, Microsoft, and (most) every other major tech device manufacturer do, is an outright sin and a crime against our ability to enjoy technology and expand upon it.
Use Linux! CFW your cell phone, MP3 Player, XBOX, TiVo – everything! Use technology to the full extent of it’s power.
Just my two cents

The definition of irony.

I think they should at least give credit and give the developers some kind of compensation.
I’m sorry though, I tried to make 2 of the Pandora batteries myself and said screw it. Wasted $45.00. The datel Tool battery was well worth the investment.
November 10, 2008 at 4:31 am
Yea that’ll be right Datel screwing over more people its not a bug surprise if you could do it and make money off of it you would i know i would….

I find this sad and pathetic of them… these ppl arnt developers, their thieves… i feel that as “developers”, they’re certainly not doing their job
November 11, 2008 at 4:42 pm
This was the same with the Max Media Dock for the Nintendo DS >_< and to make matters worse… they don’t warrant they’re products for shit. I’ve had several of they’re products break on me and they “claim” they’ll do something… but it never happens. They always make an excuse to why they can’t.
always a waste of money V_V

just think about this one
if they sew wont that expose them to get sewed for hacking the psp?
i dont support datel worth anything so yea
December 28, 2008 at 5:47 am
I agree with the guy above. I support the homebrew scene 100%. I do believe we should enjoy technology to its fullest. But it wouldn’t be smart for the scene to have a lawsuit since the homebrew scene already violated Sony’s copyright rules by altering copyrighted software and they would be in big trouble. Now I would see Datel getting sued by Sony for this but oddly enough I haven’t heard anything about this. Its sad though that the hard work was stolen for another company’s benefit. Just like having someone do your homework so you can get all the credit for it. Hopefully Sony finds out what Datel is doing (if they haven’t found out already) and puts them out of business….we can make our own batteries and memory sticks so we don’t need them anyway.

What do I think? I think the scene is STUPID for not releasing under GPL! You know you’d have EFF behind you if you did!? Morons.
January 14, 2009 at 10:46 pm
Sure, they’re jerks for doing it. But in the real world if a company sees an inexpensive, legal, risk-free way to make profit they’re going to go for it. It’s the developers’ fault for not releasing it under GPL.
