Japanese gaming blog, Famitsu has gotten their hands on the PSP-3000 and has compared the two for us.
One of the most recognised differences is the screen as you can see in the shot below:
The colours are supposedly more vibrant and the new screen contains less glare with reduced ghosting.
More comparisons after the jump.
Another notable change is the metallic ring around the PSP logo at the back of the system:
The PS logo has been removed from the top corner and replaced with the Sony logo. The PS logo has then replaced the HOME button:
Other changes include the talked about inbuilt microphone and slightly different button design below the screen. The edges of the new PSP is said to be rounder and more comfortable in your hands.
Let us know in the comments if any of these changes displayed has influenced your opinion on the PSP-3000.

ok, does anyone’s psp slim ever look as bad as the one in that picture?
August 23, 2008 at 7:23 pm
Hmmm I dont think my screen looks that bad as the PSP slim in the photo. The PSP-300 does look good. But still I’m not sure its worth paying 169 usd for it…

i wonder if you can get custom firmware on it
August 23, 2008 at 10:55 pm
The screen looks like it’s worth it. But really, my 2000’s screen isn’t that bad, as the photo depicts.
August 24, 2008 at 3:10 am
it’s just the same that we are going to play a games… as long we can play a games on psp it’s just the same cause we buy psp for games
August 24, 2008 at 3:29 am

August 24, 2008 at 4:05 am
It’s not worth buying, sony is making u guys look like idiots buying psp after psp, and after psp, this PSP-3000 series is not that impressive, when the psp camera comes out with the the psp in the U.S. in stores, then i will consider buying it.
P.S.
My slim psp screen doesn’t look like that, they used iphoto
August 24, 2008 at 4:38 am
it’s a trick look at the color difference in the table and PSP shadows, there is a difference in the brightness
looks like they are putting more light in the top one (2000) and is reflecting more light which means they focus the light in the top one.
it’s not worth buying, unless sony has something under the sleeve, my 2000 is just fine at least for now.

Go make a picture of an old TV or Monitor and compare it with what you actually see when looking at it and then go saying things like mine don’t look like that. Not that the picture isn’t a bit fake but anyway.
Also just because you have a Slim doesn’t mean everybody have one – I for one I’m glad I didn’t exchanged mine phat for a slim now I’ll probably do it.
August 24, 2008 at 4:19 pm
Still not going to buy it until it can be hacked.
August 24, 2008 at 10:21 pm
if you are a smart person you would know that almost every three or four months a new psp comes out making you regret the one you had before, when the camera comes with the psp, and if it is hacked then i will buy it, wat do you thnk

Is it really worth buying a psp 3000. I mean I don’t want to offend my psp 2000,but anyways, I’m not byuing it until I have enough money and I hear news that it’s hacked.
August 25, 2008 at 4:00 am
ha ha that’s the best sony could come out with they are just keeping the good features and puting them one by one in.next a built in camera proberly then guess what all the idots would want one huh!’sigh’
August 25, 2008 at 7:38 am
This isn’t worth buying if you already have a 2000. Seriously, who gives a shit about a damn mic. The screen won’t be much of a difference. I wouldn’t buy this unless they add more stuff to it that are actually worth it.
August 25, 2008 at 3:34 pm
EPIC FAIL! Sony isnt even trying anymore the PSP slim 2000 was Sony’s last great creation or maybe it was fat which ever went before PS3 cuz the PS3 failed… miserbly
August 25, 2008 at 4:43 pm
sony is just fuckin with us they want us to buy that psp becous it couldnt be hacked ihave a psp phat and am very happy whit it and am not going to buy even a psp slim
mother fuckers

I’m wondering whether it would be possible to place over the screen – I think it IS actually possible, seeing as how the screen seems to have the same dimensions.
My CFW’d PSP Slim is awesome for me, so a screen replacement is as far as I’d go anyways.
August 25, 2008 at 6:40 pm
Is anyone here gona to upgrade? I must say the new screen looks awesome but the microphone i wouldnt use. psp 2000 cost 220euro in december and this is 199euros? They couldve added some better features but then look at the 2000 it was just slimmer and lighter so itll never be huge i guess…

when is someone going to make a breakthrough with homebrew again. everything is getting lame. there’s so little out there that ‘pspslim’ hacking website has information about the new 3000. yes it is probably going to be slightly better.. mic etc. DAX will get passed the pandora issue. he always does or is he a she :S lol. Everything is hackable!!!
new homebrew please!!! i mean who wants wolfstein no offence. it is just so old. if i wanted that i would use the genesis or atari emulator peace out
August 26, 2008 at 4:28 am
how to tell that i have a fake psp?
August 26, 2008 at 9:59 am
@Gems..
If it doesn’t work.
You can’t get fake PSP’s.
August 26, 2008 at 12:02 pm
These adjustments aren’t very attractive. Unless they add more ram, better battery capacity and some sort of advanced processor, this new product is really lacking.
August 26, 2008 at 2:22 pm
i don’t see the point of this new psp 3000, as far as i can see all it has is a little bit better display. what the new psp 3000 needs it, flash player 9, better graphics, faster internet connections with better signal detection, HD UMD’s and about 256Mb to 512MB of ram, also it should have a calculator, be able to take notes and you should be able to view pdf files, unless it has at least a few of those it’s not worth it. Also the quality in game graphics should all be as good as crisis core or better.
August 26, 2008 at 10:46 pm
I agree. So far the changes are fairly lame. I was expecting a touch screen amongst other boosts. If sony played their game right, they would make the ultimate cellphone/ipod/iphone killer with their PSP. I wonder what they’re waiting for, why they are holding back?
August 26, 2008 at 11:38 pm
Eh, fellas… you shouldn’t expect anything that old PSP games can’t take advantage of. A second analog nub, touch screen, better graphics capabilities, etc. are the kinds of things a PSP2 might have, not the PSP 3000. Reduced ghosting, better battery life, a microphone, and another stab at a hack-proof PSP are about all we could ever expect out of the 3000. Other things, like an updated flash player, an update to the buggy web browser (which hasn’t changed since launch), DivX support, etc. come from firmware updates, which actually have been kinda lame.
August 27, 2008 at 12:57 am
@Neil, I agree with you 100% there.
August 27, 2008 at 1:27 pm
but technically speaking, wasn’t the first psp number 1, psp 2000 the 2nd and psp 3000 the 3rd one???????????? i mean if it wasn’t meant to be like that then they should have just built accessories, not a whole new psp with only one or 2 new things that arn’t even worth a second glance
August 28, 2008 at 3:05 pm
jushen- Those are the model #s, not the names. Sony’s advertisements for the 2000 just call it “the slimmer, lighter PSP”. Some things can’t be improved with accessories. Personally, I’m glad they came out with the 2000, or I might never have gotten a PSP
August 28, 2008 at 4:46 pm
i think that of course Sony is gonna make a psp beating the crap out of ipods/iphones with more RAM, 65nm CPU, built in cam, mic, blue Ray UMDs, touch screen, ETC…”sigh”…… oh i wish. but as u can see pirating their games making them run out of business so im guesting they’re gonna make a new one once after the old model comes out so u could waste your money so they can make some money. “sigh” so fellas..were gonna have to play the waiting game if we waiting those new upgrade
August 30, 2008 at 1:31 am
Just saw gamespot’s video interview. Turns out the 3000 is actually less power efficient than the 2000, and the extended battery kit will still be available. Weird, the guy said 3.5 to 4 hours from the regular (1200mAh) battery and 10 hours out of the extended (2200mAh)… lol do the math.
August 30, 2008 at 1:33 am
wow, I posted at exactly the wrong time
August 31, 2008 at 1:17 pm
will psp3000 have a different motherboard(ex.ta)can it be hackable?
September 1, 2008 at 3:20 pm
When the first psp was made i was amazed at what it could have done, but when psp slim came out it was the a bigggg difference they made, now this came out???? the only diff is the mic and screen i got a psp slim and i got no problems wirh me screen lol. They should have made this 3000 model to 2000 instead because from phat to this new model will still have a big difference, peopel who are wating for this, u dunt need to because its not a big difference so go ahead and buy the 2000 model, also if you will eve want to hack than dunt get the 3000 model because it will be harder to hack.
September 14, 2008 at 2:21 am
make the graphics better nobody cares about the dang model OOH ITS SMOOTHER BIG DEAL
October 3, 2008 at 10:34 pm
oh wip de do they have a mic, slightly different surface than the 2000 and other stuff no one except idoits care about u would have to be a fool to waste ur mpney on one of these. like neil said there less efficient then the 2000’s seris. the best thing too do is play the waiting until they make some REAL changes in the psp and there should also be a factory trade avilable when the make a new psp that is worth buying so a bunch of people dont get ripped of and you should also be able to trade your old psp umd discs for the new one. another reason u shouldnt get the 3000 seris is u cant hack it YET so you have to buy games instead of download them and lose out on all the other geat psp slim 2000’s downgraded features and come on they changed the playstion logo to sony and made the ring on the back smaller BIG WHOOP! whats that going to do to make the game graphics better and the battery life longer abosoultly nothing thats what ihave spoken.
October 15, 2008 at 1:17 pm
For me i will still use the 1st PSP. i will not buy PSP3000. if u buy u are a fool. just only the the screen is different and have a mic why u waste your money to buy. if u are like me just use PSP or PSP slim. for PSP one thing is go is the battery live is long. if only have PSP2 than i think that i will buy.
October 20, 2008 at 1:06 am
I brough one, and it’s good, but it’s probably not worth buying if you already have a PSP Slim… But then I brought one because it cost exactly the same to buy that and a PSP-2000, and this is my first PSP, so why not go for the newer one?
February 17, 2009 at 6:47 am
haha same happened to me!! my 1st.
i just decideded to get the latest but to be honest i regret it….
the lcd is heaps better though..
great point!
October 26, 2008 at 7:17 am
Sony blew it by not offering some obvious features that would have pushed these out the door. Let’s list what could have been done: 128mb ram, built-in camera, USB port with real hosting for larger external storage devices or even add on controllers, second analog on the right, and a few other good additions I’m sure others have mentioned.
What did they do? They added a built in mic and a better(?) screen. The screen has hardware problems, so that’s a bust. Glare is a minor issue and there are easy ways to counter it. So all we really get is an internal MIC and stricter security? Uhh..epic phail…
The 3000 will be hacked. However, with the 3000 barely being worth buying, one has to ask if it’s really worth the effort to hack?
Apparently this is just a cheap resale of a more secure system with no extra valuable features. If SONY was smart, they would have offered significant improvements to spawn the creation of better games in order to drive customers to the 3000. I simply don’t understand what they were thinking.
Oh, also look out for protection schemes in new games that will check for modifications.
